We believe that the current healthcare system is broken, and that the Direct Primary Care model is the solution. Like many other patients, we have become frustrated and disillusioned with the corporate and insurance takeover of healthcare, which creates barriers to patient care, increases costs with little transparency, and drives physician burnout. At Florida Direct Primary Care, we are creating a new approach to healthcare, while centering on the old-fashioned doctor-patient relationship. We strive to build personalized patient relationships, while offering exceptional access to compassionate and high-quality care, with transparent and affordable pricing. Dr. Wilson is passionate about caring for his patients as if they were family: with kindness, respect, and professional excellence.

Thankfully, no. We see patients with or without health insurance, we just don’t bill insurance companies for your office visits. By not contracting with insurance companies, we are able to prioritize the doctor-patient relationship in several critical ways. We are not subject to the arbitrary and decreasing insurance reimbursement rates to see our patients. This allows us to not have to rely on seeing a higher volume of patients to make our business model successful. By having a panel of patients that is a fraction of the typical insurance based model, we are able to offer our patients extended visits, same day or next day appointments, unlimited visits, and even after hours, direct access to your doctor who knows you well. This arrangement also frees us from the typical insurance contractual agreements that prevent physicians from offering wholesale prices on laboratory tests and imaging, thus passing on the savings directly to our patients. However, you can still use your insurance to cover the cost of labs, imaging studies, and medications if desired. Patients often find that paying directly for these services through our negotiated reduced rates is more cost effective. Due to unforeseen medical expenses such as hospitalizations, surgery, cancer treatment etc, we recommend all our patients have at least a high-deductible insurance/health share plan to cover for catastrophic events.

Direct Primary Care is built around long-term relationships, convenient access to your physician, and personalized care without the restrictions of insurance networks. For most patients this works extremely well, but there are a few situations where our model may not be the best fit.
Our practice is generally not ideal for patients who are looking for a one-time visit or a short-term membership just to address a single medical issue. We focus on ongoing care and building lasting physician-patient relationships.
Additionally, HMO insurance plans and HMO Medicare Advantage plans often do not work well with Direct Primary Care. These plans usually require that you select a primary care physician who participates within the insurance network. That physician must follow the insurance company’s referral rules and bill the plan for services at contracted rates.
Because we operate outside of insurance networks, HMO plans typically cannot list us as your designated primary care physician or process referrals from our office.
Insurance plans with PPO networks, high deductibles, traditional Medicare, health sharing plans, or those without health insurance generally pair much better with the Direct Primary Care model.

We do not prescribe controlled substances such as narcotics or benzodiazepines. We do not perform pelvic exams, pap smears or breast exams. There may be conditions or situations that are better served by a specialist. Dr. Wilson has relationships with many specialists in the St. Augustine area and will work hard to facilitate that connection for you.
